Etherine Bumpers Lassiter, affectionately known as "Eng" by her family and close friends, was born on November 20, 1924 to the late Mr. Willie and Mrs. Emma Pugh Bumpers in Clarke County, Jackson, Alabama. On Friday, August 9, 2019, Etherine was called home to rest by her Heavenly Father who doeth all things well.
Etherine confessed Christ at an early age and united with the Berry's Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church and remained a member throughout her childhood and early adult years. She was very active in the church, serving as pianist/organist and director of the choir. Later in life she moved to Montgomery, Alabama and became affiliated, under watch care, with the Saint John's AME Church with her son and his family.
Etherine met and married the late Condy James Lassiter and from this union one child was born, the late Conrad James Lassiter.
Etherine was a graduate of Clarke County Training School, Selma University and Alabama State University (ASU) where in 1959 she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Education, and in 1974 she earned a Master of Education degree. After graduating with a BS degree from Alabama State University, she was employed in the Clarke County School System as a Classroom Teacher and worked in that capacity until retirement for 46 years.
Etherine was a Member of Amies Pride Chapter #590 OES of Winn, where she served as past Worthy Matron, Mizpah Grand Chapter, Prince Hall Affiliation-Jurisdiction of Alabama. She was a member of the Trustee Board at Berry's Chapel; the Retired Teachers Association and the National Teachers Association. She was crowned Miss Capitol Hill Nursing Home in a pageant in May 2019.
Preceding her in death is her son and her siblings: Conrad James Lassiter, Mary Lee Singleton (sister), Elnora Cox (sister), Clyde Bumpers (brother), Wilmer Bumpers Sr. (brother) and Percy Lee Bumpers (brother).
Etherine leaves to cherish her memories two devoted grandchildren: Kenikie Yvonne and Kevin James Lassiter of Atlanta, Georgia; daughter-in-law, Mrs. Charlie M. Lassiter of Montgomery, Alabama; one sister, Mrs. Elmira Beal of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends, and special cousins Mrs. Karen Donald, Mrs. Lenora Bumpers Portis, Mr. Randall Bumpers, two devoted care-givers, Mrs. Cassandra Barnes and Mrs. Mary Bellamy and the nursing staff at Fresenius Dialysis Center, and Capitol Hill Nursing Facility where she resided for the last 4 months.
