Della Mae Cox, the Coats’ family matriarch, decided to take her eternal rest on Jan. 16, 2021, she was 101 years old. Della was a beloved mom, grandma,granny, sister, aunt and friend. She was kind and a woman of faith, who was always willing help. She was truly a prayer warrior who extended care and kindness to everyone.
Della Mae Coats was born to Willis V. Coats and Ida Mae Law Coats on Dec. 14, 1919. She grew up in Coffeeville, attending Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church. Later, while living in Grove Hill, she attended Pine Chapel No. 1 Baptist Church, where she served as president of the Usher Board. In the late 1970s she relocated to Mobile, where she attended St. Monica Catholic Church and in June 2008, she moved to Dallas, Texas, where she was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church.
Preceding her in death, were her parents, Willis and Ida Mae Law Coats; three sons, Ernest Dorsey, Henley Cox Jr. and Terry Wayne Cox; four daughters, Mary L. Moore, Patricia A. Cox, Genet Cox and Mary A. Cox; and siblings, Lettie Coats, Vivian Coats, Clarence Coats, Inez Brown, Jonnie Scaife Morris, Aurilla Pugh, Marie Coats and Geraldine Coats Bridgeford.
She leaves to cherish her memory, her loving children, Cleveland Cox of Marrero, La., and Dorothy Cox (Joey) Whaley of Dallas, Texas; 19 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, 20 great-great-grandchildren and two great-great-great-grandchildren; with a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
