Ethel Mae Carter Washington as born on Aug. 9, 1940, to the parentage of the late Timothy Carter and Ethel
Rhodes Carter in Chatom. She peacefully departed her earthly home at Jackson Health Care Nursing Home Aug. 6,
2024.
“Mae” or “Ms. Ethel,” as she was affectionately known, attended Koenton High School in the Class of 1960 in
Koenton. Her employment included domestic housekeeping and cooking. She enjoyed preparing delicious meals for
her family, friends and the neighborhood at large.
As a faithful member of Pine Chapel No. 2 Baptist Church, she served as an usher and choir member. Her passion
for sports was demonstrated in her love for the Alabama Crimson Tide and the Los Angeles Lakers.
Ms. Ethel was married to the late Silas Washington Sr.
Preceding her in death is her son, Jeffery K. Washington Sr.; grandsons, Sadarius Washington and Karon Finch
Washington; sisters, Myrtle, Martha, Mattie and Gladys; and brothers, W.C. and Odell Carter.
Remaining to embrace her memories are her loving and devoted children, Valentine (Betty) Washington, Silas
Washington Jr., Sheldon (Wilhelmina) Washington, Veronica Washington and Michelle Renee (LaMark) Herring;
daughter-in-love, Barbara Washington; 18 devoted grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren; siblings, Willie Mae
Johnson, Clara Barnes, Lloyd Carter, James (Katherine) Carter, Roy (Delois) Carter, and Samuel Carter, loved as a
son; best friend, Johnita Cox; with a host of nephews, nieces, other relatives and friends.
