Geraldine Pugh Merida, affectionately known as “Gee Gee,” peacefully journeyed from her earthly home to
her eternal resting place on May 27, 2025. Born on September 6, 1942, to the late Charlie and Mattie Pugh, Geraldine
accepted Christ at an early age, a faith that would guide her throughout her life.
On July 29, 1967, she was united in Holy Matrimony with the love of her life, Joe Merida, Sr. This union was blessed
with four sons, and Geraldine deeply loved her family, cherishing every moment spent with them. Their laughter and
togetherness brought her immense joy.
Geraldine’s devotion extended to her spiritual home, Pine Chapel Baptist Church No. 2, where she served faithfully
for many years. Her leadership was evident as she held multiple positions, including President of the Matrons
Department, President of the Missionary Department, advisor to the Junior Usher Board, and a dedicated member of
the senior choir until her health no longer permitted. She also served as Treasurer of the Bethel Baptist Association
until health challenges required her to step down.
Her commitment to service shone brightly within her community. Geraldine was a long-time member of the Jackson
Rescue Squad, Amies Pride Chapter #590, Order of the Eastern Star, and a proud member of the Order of Elks. As a
passionate advocate for social justice and voter awareness, she was an active member of the NAACP and the Clarke
County Chapter of the Alabama Democratic Council (ADC). Geraldine worked tirelessly in voter registration efforts
and as a dedicated poll watcher, leaving a lasting impact on her community’s engagement in the democratic process.
Geraldine's educational journey began at Toddtown Public Schools, leading her to graduate from Wilson Hall High
School. She pursued higher education at Bishop State Community College, earning her Licensed Practical Nurse
(LPN) certification. Her passion for nursing continued as she received an Associate Degree in Nursing (RN) from
Wallace College in Selma, Alabama, and later a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from the University of South
Alabama.
As a dedicated healthcare professional, Geraldine served her community with compassion and skill. She worked as
both an LPN and RN in Jackson and Grove Hill, Alabama, and later at the Clarke County Health Department. She also
shared her knowledge as an adjunct instructor for Alabama Southern Community College, ultimately concluding her
distinguished career as Director of the Alabama Department of Rehabilitation Services.
Beyond her spiritual and professional commitments, Geraldine had a flair for gardening and a keen eye for fashion.
She loved shopping for stylish clothes and always carried herself with grace and elegance. Known for her kindness,
compassion, and unwavering willingness to help anyone in need, she touched many lives.
Geraldine was preceded in death by one sister, Claretta P. James; two brothers, Johnny Lee and Jimmy Lee Pugh; two
nieces: Carol Pugh and Nicole Ware; and three nephews, Charlie Pugh Jr., Early James, and DeManuel Pugh.
She leaves a legacy of love and cherished memories for her devoted husband of 57 years, Joe L. Merida, Sr.; her four
sons: Jeffery (Tawan) Merida of Demopolis, Alabama; Joe L. (Tammye) Merida, Jr. of Enterprise, Alabama; Jerel E.
(Alvis) Merida, Sr., and Jerome D. (Niquitha) Merida, Sr., both of Toddtown, Alabama. Her memory will also be
treasured by her six grandchildren: Shannon (DeVante) Snell of Montgomery, Alabama; Jerel E. (Shani) Merida, Jr. of
Biloxi, Mississippi; Jerome Merida, Jr., Chelsey Merida, and Shalyn Merida, all of Montgomery, Alabama; and Jared
Merida of Toddtown, Alabama. She is also survived by three brothers: Richard (Dorothy) Pugh of Newark, California;
Rivers Pugh of Richmond, California; and Charlie (Lucinda) Pugh of Huntsville, Alabama; three sisters: Alzaline
(Herbert) Grayson, Emma Fenderson, and Nellie (Hubert) Finch, all of Toddtown, Alabama; one sister-in-law,
Velniece Pugh of Toddtown, Alabama; five great-grandchildren: Carson Snell, Gene Martin, Elena Grace Snell, Kylee
Merida, and Jerel Merida III; along with a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
Though God has called one of His beautiful servants home, Geraldine’s spirit will live on in the hearts of all who
knew her. Her legacy of love, service, and unwavering faith will never be forgotten.
