While growing up, James had a strong passion for playing football. He was a 1975 graduate of Washington County High School in Chatom, AL. Throughout his school age years, he developed skills that led him to play this organized sport of football in high school. He played two positions; running back (offense) and linebacker (defense) respectfully. Beginning his senior year in 1974, the third game of the football season, Chatom versus Thomasville, an away game, James "Noonie" was wearing jersey # 42 . He was completing a defensive play as a linebacker and sustained a traumatic spinal cord injury that resulted in him becoming a quadriplegic at the age of 18  years old. He was playing his favorite sport- football.

He overcame many difficult obstacles and health issues that required mental and physical assistance throughout his life. He managed to remain positive and trusted in God. In addition, he enjoyed loving and caring for the senior community. He always had a good spirit towards others and was a great phone operator. He would call everyone just to say " hey, how are you doing? I'm just checking on you".

James "Noonie" , as he was called by many, loved to have conversations and maintained close relationships with family and friends. He would share childhood memories that most of us had forgotten.
