Joe Samuel Fields Sr. was a native of Cortelyou and a resident of Sunflower. His heavenly Father welcomed him into his heavenly home Monday, June 1st, 2020. He was born to Benjamin Fields and Thelma Fields on Feb. 15, 1928. Joe attended the Fields Community School for six years, junior high school in Sunflower for one year and graduated from McIntosh High School in the Class of 1944.
At an early age he united with the Little Sunflower Missionary Baptist Church, where he was active in Sunday School as a teacher and later superintendent, church secretary and chairman of the board deacons. Following graduation from high school, Joe attended Alabama Agricultural Mechanical Institute for two years and began to teach World War II veterans for approximately two years. Drafted to serve in the Army in 1950, he served his country for two years.
On June 4, 1954 he was united in Holy Matrimony to Pauline Geneva Nelson of McIntosh. He then returned to Alabama Agricultural Mechanical Institute and received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Vocational Agriculture. Joe and Pauline were blessed with four children who survive him, Ernie L. (Annete) Fields of McIntosh, Ovetta Oakley of Mobile, Tena Dillard of Sunflower and Joe Samuel (Barbara) Fields Jr. of Mobile; 10 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, five siblings and one sister-in-law, with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
