Perry Johnson Obituary

Deacon Perry Lee Johnson, Jr.

As we celebrate life and love, at times such as this, we turn to the blessed words of Jesus. He said to His disciples, "let not your hearts be troubled. You believe in God, believe also in me. For in my Father's house are many mansions. If it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you and if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you unto myself. But where I am there you may be also.”  John 14:1-3

On April 10, 2020, Deacon Perry Johnson gained his wings and quickly went to be with the Lord. He was the 1st born son of the late Perry Lee Johnson, Sr.  and Elnora Stewart Johnson.  As the big brother, Perry was the gentle giant with a big bark, but an even bigger heart.  June, as he was affectionately called by his siblings, embraced the role as ‘big brother’ and work diligently to fulfill this assignment.

Perry  was a proud 1965 graduate of North Central High School.  He was employed with Sheffield Furniture Company for many years and mastered the craft of refrigeration and appliance repair.  He later graduated from the Police Academy in Bay Minette, AL  and served  the town of Chatom as a Police Officer.  As fate unfolded, this career path was interrupted due to illness; however, he  persevered and used this adversity to his advantage and fully launched his own appliance repair business.

As a member of Lilly Grove Missionary Baptist Church, he served in various capacities throughout the years as church treasurer, assistant superintendent,  and shared his most admired culinary skills as chairman of the kitchen committee  for many years, and van driver.  He also served as former chairman of the cemetery committee.  He was currently serving as Deacon,   assistant Adult Men Sunday School teacher,  and a member of the Golden Agers.   Deacon Johnson loved to cook, fish, laughter and life.

He was preceded in death by his two loving daughters, Anitrice Lenora Johnson Abston and Sharon Denise Johnson Spence; brother, Aubrey Wayne Johnson; and sister, Queen Esther Gordon.

His legacy will continue through the lives of his loving and devoted wife of 54 years, Clara Creighton Johnson; two granddaughters:  Kishna James, Duluth, GA and Kyra Abston, Tuscaloosa, AL;  three grandsons:  Scottie McBride Tuscaloosa, AL; Keyshaun Abston, Chatom, AL;  and Jared McBride, Troy, AL.  He also leaves to cherish his memory, his great-grandchildren Bryson Norwood, Calix and Mahaliah Martin, and Kaison Abston; his children:  Patrick (Wanda) Hill, Johnel Rodgers, Michael (Pam) Glenn, and Sylvia Leverette; brothers: Tony (Shonnette) Johnson, Jackson, AL, Jerry (Rosylan) Johnson, Douglasville, GA, and Gregory (Ovetta) Johnson, Huntsville, AL; sisters: Louise Parker,  Jackson, AL; Martha (J.C.) Stewart,  Stateline, MS;  Dorothy (Charles) Hicks,  Cerritos, CA;  and Della (Lawrence) Wright, Carson, CA;  sisters-in-law:  Delois Johnson; Annette (Anthony) Gwin; Thelma Kirkland; brothers-in-law:  Roger (Jackie) Griffin, Milton (Catherine) Griffin; special lifelong friend: Fondy Carter;  many devoted nieces, nephews, and extended family and friends.
