The Rev. Dr. Lonnie Moore, 93, was born on Nov. 3, 1930, in Sunflower, to the parentage of Ezekiel Moore Sr.
and Katie Jane Robinson Moore, where he was also welcomed by 13 siblings, with more to come. At the age of 19,
his mother passed and his father would later marry Mary Jane Hall Moore. As time progressed, his blended family
grew to include a total of 23 children.
Lonnie attended college in Montgomery at Alabama State University, where his studies were interrupted when he
was summoned for Army duties during the Korean Conflict. Once his tour of duty was completed, he returned home
and married the love of his life, Nevada Reed, June 26, 1954. As he and his beloved began their new life, they
moved their pre-marriage church memberships from Sunflower Baptist Church and Roberts Chapel Methodist
Church to St. Paul Baptist Church, where they remained faithful members unto death.
Under the leadership of the Rev. Willie Griffin, Lonnie was ordained a deacon in 1961, and later appointed
chairman of the Deacon Board. As chairman, his most important project, along with Deacons Will Toole, Dave
Adams, Wornie Reed and Grove Barnes, was to oversee the construction of the new sanctuary for St. Paul’s Baptist
Church in which services continue today. In December of 1983, his role of superintendent of the Sunday School was
interrupted when he received his call to officially begin his journey in ministry. In November 1986, he became the
pastor of Union Baptist Church and remained faithfully as pastor until our Lord and Savior called him home.
In 1998, he retired from Ciba Specialty Chemicals in McIntosh, following 37 years of service. At the age of 68, he
re-enrolled in college to complete the studies that had been interrupted. He changed his degree of study from
Agriculture Education to Theology. In 2011, he earned his Ph.D. in Theology from Saint Luke Evangelical School
of Biblical Studies.
Following a long and enriched life, the Rev. Dr. Lonnie Moore transitioned from this life on Aug. 21, 2024.
Having preceded him in death, he now rejoins his beloved Nevada Reed Moore.
