Robert Morrissette Obituary

Deacon Robert Lee Morrissette was born on Nov. 6, 1935 in Barlow Bend, to the late Mary Ida Davis and Charlie Morrissette.

At an early age, he joined the Union Chapel Baptist Church where he served as deacon. A devout devotional leader, he had a lifelong passion for singing. Robert’s love for singing was a constant presence in his life. He loved singing in the choir, where he led his favorite songs “I’ll fly away,” “He Sweet I Know,” and he often sang a song that says “We are going to a better place we will make it by my God’s Grace.”  On Friday, Aug. 30, 2024, after running this earthly race, he made it to that city that he sang of as being so bright and fair.

Robert, also known as “T-Bone,” was a hard worker and spent more than 30 years at Lathan Funeral Home, where he took much pride in his profession; so much, that during travel, he recognized ever cemetery in which he had laid someone to rest. Following retirement, he was able to spend more time doing what he really loved… fishing, fishing and fishing. He found peace and joy by the water, spending countless hours casting lines and enjoying the tranquility of nature. His love for fishing was not just about the catch; it was about the moments of reflection and the connection with his friends and the natural world.

Robert was a man of great kindness, known for his gentle spirit and dedication. This dedication is noted as he spent 50 years as a member of the White Hall Lodge #951, where he served as Tyler under three Worship Masters.

Robert was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Ida Davis; sister, Elzora Perkins; and his wife of 56 years, Bertha Peoples Morrissette.

He leaves to cherish the memories of his life two sons, Clauzell Stokes of Mobile and Earnest Charles (Sharlene) Davis of Jackson; three daughters, Kathleen (Evon) James of Choctaw Bluff, Rutha (Frank) Phillips of Camden, and Sharlot (Samuel) Perine of Gainestown; a very devoted nephew, John (Bernice) Peoples of Barlow Bend; sisters, Edna (Bobby) Jiles, Brenda Bailey, Luvirda Todd, Annie Morrissette Johnson and Gladys Morrissette, all of Mobile, Barbara Moore of Lancaster, Calif., Dr. Alice (James) Black of Prosper, Texas, and Lisa (Marvin) Robinson of Theodore; grandchildren, Shemeka Martin, Clauzell Stokes Jr., Evon James Jr. Justin Davis, India Stokes, Monique James, Kristin Phillips, Samuel Perine, Renarta Stokes, Savon Perine, and Carlos and Rico Smiley; 15 great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Elijah Peoples of Mobile; with a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and many, many friends, including Mary Starling, Dora Jackson, Jalen Gaines, James Clarke, Joann Pickens and the entire Barlow Bend community, who will forever cherish the memories of his love for the simple pleasures in life.
