Sarah Christine Doss Hughes, a native of Myrtlewood and resident of Grove Hill, answered the Master’s call Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2020 while at the home of her daughter. Born Dec. 3, 1924 to Prince Doss and Pinkie Tanks Doss, she was 95 years of age.
Sarah attended Linden High School and was the salutatorian of the class. Raised in a loving Christian home, she accepted Jesus as her Lord and Savior and became a member of the New Jerusalem Baptist Church in Myrtlewood. Later in life, she moved to Mobile and united with the Blooming Grove Baptist Church in Prichard. In 1972, Sarah moved back to the Lily Valley community of Jackson and united with New St. Matthew Missionary Baptist Church, where she served in many capacities over the years including as a Sunday school teacher, choir member in the Missionary Society, as a Mother of the Church, and as a faithful member of the White Circle. She and her husband, the late Rev. P.H. Hughes had a radio ministry entitled “The Plain Truth.”
In 2012, Sarah moved to Cleveland, Ohio with her daughter, Brenda, and later with her son, Alvin, and united with Everlasting Baptist Church. In 2018, she returned to Alabama to reside with her youngest daughter, Pinkie, in Grove Hill. Sarah enjoyed singing, praying and worshiping the Lord, and loved visits and phone calls from her many devoted friends. She was a true bright light and inspiration to her family and to the community.
Preceding her in death were her parents; husbands, Randall McDaniel and the Rev. P.W. Hughes Sr.; son, Preston Hughes Jr.; grandson, Charles Hughes; sisters, Ethel Doss, Bettye (Tom) Doss, Leila (Dudley) Hudson, Samantha (Marion) Blackston and Mary Ester (Elmore) Allen; brothers, Henry Doss, Eddie (Ida) Doss and her twin brother, Abraham Doss; and daughters-in-law, Fannie McDaniel and Vaness Durham Hughes.
Sarah leaves to forever cherish her memories, two daughters, Brenda D. McDaniels Williams of Cleveland, Ohio and Pinkie (Willie) Boykin of Grove Hill; three sons, Alvin McDaniel of Cleveland, Ohio, John (Rosalie) Hughes of Panama City, Fla., and Kurley Morresette of Newark, N.J.; daughter-in-law, Earnestine Chaney Hughes of Mobile; 16 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren and 27 great-great-grandchildren; with a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives; two goddaughters, Ann Bracy and Lakrissa Richardson Hunt; two devoted caretakers whom she loved dearly, Linda Boykin Sharp and Dannye Sumlin; and many, many dear friends, including Mattie Pearl Taylor, Janet James, Anna Mosley, Mary Ann Pritchett, Christine Robinson, Doris Watson, Elvin Fox, Johnnie Black Sr., her beloved church family and a very long time family friend, Wilcy Mae “Sis” Boykin.
