Thomas Carl Mitchell

Thomas Carl Mitchell, or “T.C.” as his family and friends knew him, passed away peacefully in his home at the age of 55 in Grove Hill on Friday, Aug. 20, 2021. He now joins his mother, Jorena Mitchell Barnett, who passed away April 16, 2018, in heaven. Thomas was a member of Morning Star Baptist Church.

T.C. was born on June 20, 1966 in Whatley to Jorena Mitchell Barnett and Cossie Pines II. He was raised by his late grandparents, Johnny J. Mitchell, Mamie Mitchell, Cossie Pines Sr. and Janie Pines. T.C. would later graduate from Clarke County High School in 1984, relocate to Connecticut, and begin a career as a beautifully skilled carpenter. He returned to the South years later, spending some time in Georgia before later returning home to Alabama to be with family. 

Thomas was the resident comedian, always finding a way to bring a smile to your face or make you laugh hysterically. His kind heart made people gravitate to him, and he made many friends throughout his journey because of his infectious personality. He was a beloved son, brother, father, friend and uncle, and will truly be missed by all. We will cherish his memory and remember all the happy times we got to enjoy with him throughout the years.

Left to forever treasure his precious memories are his father and bonus mom, Cossie Pines II and Mary “Cat” Pines of Toddtown; son, Torrence Johnson of Whatley; two brothers, Cossie Pines III (Lashannon Pines) of  Mobile and Derrick Barnett of Grove Hill; five sisters, Kezie Barnett, Rachel Barnett and Andrea Burroughs, all of Grove Hill, Kathi Godbolt (Lamont Godbolt) of Dallas, Texas, and Sharon Mitchell Morrissette (Joey Morrissette) of Grovetown, Ga.; devoted friend, Andrea Kennedy of Grove Hill; with a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 29, at Morning Star Baptist Church, with Pastor Ted Watkins officiating. Interment to follow at Herron Hill Cemetery in Whatley, followed by a balloon release by family and friends. 

Final life celebration has been entrusted to Jackson Memorial Funeral Home, 203 East Ross St., Jackson, AL 36545.
