Bro. Walter Martin began his journey home on June 26, 2023. Walter Martin was born Aug 21, 1929 as a twin in Grove Hill, AL , to the late Fannie and Theodore Martin. He was one of six siblings, Travis Martin, L.V. Martin, GT Martin - his twin, Floyd Martin, Edward Martin and Eleanor Martin all preceding him in passing .
Walter confessed his life to Christ at an early age and united with the Mt. Zion No . 2 Baptist Church in Grove Hill, AL. He attended Barnett Institute in Grove Hill, AL through eighth grade. Walter joined the US Army at age 21, serving in the Korean War from 1952 to 1957 as a transportation specialist. He attained the rank of Corporal and was awarded the Good Conduct medal. After receiving an honorable discharge from the Army, Walter returned to Grove Hill, working various jobs in the timber industry.
In 1963 he traveled to New Orleans, LA, seeking employment as a construction worker. While in New Orleans, he became a member of Josha Lodge No . 10 of the Grand Lodge of Jerusalem in 1978. He was crowned King of the Grand Lodge in 1996 and was a 32nd degree Master Mason.
He united with the Greater Rose Hill Baptist Church and served as a deacon and sang in the choir. He retired from the Beck's Construction Company after many years of employment. Walter was a survivor of the disastrous Hurricane Katrina in August 2005. He returned to church and served on the Deacon Board , among others.
When his health failed, he moved to Atlanta , GA to live with his daughter.
Walter is survived by his three daughters, Michelle Martin, and Marilyn Martin both of Chicago, IL and Brenda Upshaw of Atlanta, GA , two grandchildren, Lil Walter, and Elizabeth Amapakabo; with many beloved beloved nieces and nephews , including nieces, Mrs. Anette Love of Grove Hill , Deise Martin of Montgomery, Mrs. Willie Mae Noble of Mobile and Nanette Martin of Birmingham, with many others, including devoted friends, Lillie Daniels of New orleans, LA and Mr. Nesby England of Grove Hill, and a devoted cousin, Ozella Perkins of Atlanta, GA.
